"Oh, I'm sorry! I hope for a speedy recovery for your bondmate then. But Huerta is a great hospital, they have the best doctors and after all, they also treat the Councilors and so on, so they must be awesome."
She listened to Daia's explanation about the beret and tennis and nodded. However he had only a vague idea about it and imagined it a piece of equipment you had to wear playing the sport. Humans were hard to understand sometimes. "I don't know much about tennis, only that's played with balls? I am more into wrestling and biotic ball. I had no chance to visit Earth yet. I would not know were to go anyway, maybe I will join an organized trip someday, I'll get lost otherwise probably." she chuckled. "That place is so hard to figure out, don't you think? I mean, I used to think the difference between Armali and Serrice is big but these humans? It's like they are ten species in one! How do they even get along with so many languages? Thank the Goddess there are dictionaries for almost anything for the omnitools nowadays but I still encounter expressions that are not even to be found on the extranet. But I am paying close attention and learn, there are so many human students at Citadel University you are picking things up quickly. Oh, sorry, i never mentioned, but I am a student at CU."

“Thank you - she’s fine,” Daia assured Cyana with a smile, then nodded at her interests in sports. “Yes, one of the ball ones - back and forth across a centre net. Amara Rusto won one of the Grand Slams, the major tournaments, a few years ago, maybe you heard about it - first time for an asari player. I’ll stop going on about it now,” she finished with a chuckle.
Cyana’s thoughts on humanity obviously struck a chord, and she gave a fond little laugh.
“True enough,” she agreed. “After the first proper wave of human immigration to Nos Astra - that’s home for us at the moment,” she clarified, “-it seemed like there were more human cultures arriving than there were humans to bring them. The neighbourhood I was in back then was where most of the Alliance companies set up their offices, so it became a bit of a ‘little Earth’ district for a while. Exciting to be around - maybe it’s the same at university? What are you studying, if you don’t mind my asking?”

"Uh, I am afraid I have never heard of her or that slam tournament." Cyana chuckled. "It sounds like some wrestling tournament, you know like the Omega Bonecruncher. I know, I know, I probably should not watch that. But it's so exciting" she giggled.
"Oi, you are from Illium?" Now the young asari looked quite surprised. In her eyes, Daia didn't seem like a typical aloof Illium asari at all. Didn't they ll think they were so much better than the homeworld asari? So maybe her first idea was right and Daia really was a business woman or some CEO maybe... "It's a place I want to visit someday, I hear the sunsets are truly spectacular over Nos Astra. Maybe the humans think alike, right? Do you get along with your new neighbors? I do, most humans are nice and I have to admit they can be quite entertaining with all their various cultural quirks. I'm still in my first major term I am looking at this and that, currently I am focusing on galactic law."

Daia grinned at the mention of the Bonecruncher - the girl was right, it probably wasn’t the kind of entertainment she should have been watching, but that had been part and parcel of adolescence since the dawn of time.
“Eighty years in Nos Astra now, give or take,” she nodded. “It’s definitely worth a visit, the sunsets are magnificent. Helps that there’s at least three solid hours of ‘sunset’ per day even at highest sun, but that’s polar latitude for you - there’s plenty of properly sunny skies nearer the equator, but not much point when you can’t go out without being broiled.” She chuckled, then had a thought. “Have you ever seen the Red Peak tournament? I don’t know if it gets much coverage outside Illium but it’s worth watching if you get the chance - mixed martial arts and wrestling, wholly amateur but a lot of very skilled competitors go in.”
She looked impressed at Cyana’s tentative choice of field, and smiled.
“That’s a study that can take you lots of places,” she mused. “As a matter of fact one of our human friends is an advocate - she started out on Bekenstein in Alliance and Citadel law, moved to Illium and got her associate Republic commercial law qualification, and now she’s living on Nevos with her mates and completing full Republic certification. I went to Attena back on Thessia myself, a mix of galactic culture and diplomacy - although not ever with a view to going into the diplomatic corps, I just dabbled in everything.”

Cyana was slurping more of her soda as she listened to the dark skinned asari. This one seemed to be a very friendly and interesting acquaintance. Eighty years on Illium! “Awesome! Your friend must be a good lawyer then. For a human I mean. All the professors are going and going on about Illium law and how complicated it is to learn. There is a story circulating about a volus lawyer who made a bad slip in an Illium court once and ended up sending himself into indentured servitude of his defendant by accident!” She seemed shocked but not quite sure if this was really true or maybe not just much more than a myth.
“However, I don’t want to become a lawyer. But basic space law is so versatile, you need it practically everywhere when you travel, I have been thinking about signing up for a cargo company, travelling the galaxy for a while, all of the companies have legal advisors and when you trade in the Terminus or at the border regions – or even on planets like Kahjee – it’s good to have one on board.” She giggled again. “If I can catch a ride on a Tuchanka liner, maybe my knowledge of krogan wrestling styles may help me more though. But yeah, once I have my basic diploma, I might want to go on a field trip for a while, write a thesis on that subject. It’s recommended for the second diploma, you know.” There was the travel urge in a maiden showing.

“That’s true,” Daia nodded, “I’ve picked up a little law myself for the same reason - nothing formidable, just evening courses here and there while I was travelling. You can never be too prepared.” She smiled at Cyana’s prospects. “I don’t doubt there’ll be plenty of demand, with all the new trade routes coming into play. I don’t exactly hang around the spaceport back home,” she chuckled, “but I’ve still seen more than the usual number of prospector-traders around. With all the rebuilding economies, the free krogan colonies coming into play, not to mention the Perseus Veil opening up...” She nodded thoughtfully, then smiled. “You’ll have to be careful you’re not kept so busy you don’t get to enjoy all the places you visit.”
((Sorry to have kept you waiting, work got a little crazy at the end of the week.))

Cyana nodded, of course ‘working’ on a freighter was a meager excuse to get moving around and go places “Gee, I will be so happy oncethe first round of exams is over. I really want to get going now.” She laughed. Talking about it always made her itchy about travelling. This kind of behavious was also a main reason why asari tended to study ten times as long as shorter lived species. Lots of interruptions for ‘travelling projects’.
“I seriously need to talk about it with a professor now so I can draft a proper project proposal. Say, what is it you are doing, if I may ask? You don’t happen to have ships running for you that hire? I can do a bit of this and that, rated B biotic and so on?”
(sorry, i was away myself!)

Daia shared Cyana’s laughter, clearly having felt the same herself in her youth.
“Sorry, no,” she shook her head when the young woman asked about ships. “I’m just an escort - it’s not a field where you tend to accumulate spaceships. Well,” she allowed, “I’ve got one, but she’s just a little runabout shuttle, the ‘crew’ consists of a VI. And my mate and I own a medtech company as well - clean-rooms, quarantine hardware, medical sensors, that sort of thing - but we’re not nearly big enough to need our own freighters, most of our contracts are on Illium.”

Cyana raised her eyebrows at the unexpected revelation. But she played over her surprise with a bit of a overconfident pose, taking a sip from her soda as if she would be a movie star. “Oh, that’s interesting.” It really was for her since she had only little experience with the line of work Daia seemed to radiate now. The young asari of course had heard all kinds of stories about adventurous life of dancing maidens all over the galaxy, of riches and exotic places. But mostly thrird hand, she had never really talked to somebody who really was doing it. Daia must be much younger than Cyana had thought earlier.
But something didn’t fit. How could she own a business at the same time and escort? Or maybe she got the whole escort thing wrong? Or maybe thatw as just possible on Illium. Yes, that would explain it. “Too bad, I’d rather start working for someone I like… uh. Well, some asari, that’s what I want to say. You now, volus tend to give me the creeps… strictly in a business sense, but you can never know what they are up to, can you?” Like selling their ship intern on some remote terminus world to the highest bidder. Cyana shuddered and gripped her soda.

Daia’s eyes widened slightly at volus being ‘creepy’, but she smiled and nodded as Cyana clarified what she meant.
“I wouldn’t want to negotiate with the vol-clan first thing in the morning, that’s for sure,” she agreed. “I know what you mean... Perhaps you could look a little closer to home for your first trip, a ship running the Republics lanes? When I started travelling, which was... well, quite some time ago,” she grinned, “I spent a while on the Caliphera Frontier - far from Thessia and the core, so it wasn’t like I was just on a holiday, but still a Republic, still familiar. Once I’d gotten my feet wet, gotten to know the business, made some friends and contacts, then I started looking further out.” She chuckled briefly. “Different business, but the idea should hold, do you think? Get a few FTL miles under your belt, some experience, get to know some older hands who've been around and learned the tricks - so it’s not totally unknown territory when you head for deeper water yourself.”

Cyana frowoned. Noi didn't Daia sound just like a Matron all of a sudden? Having all the exciting adventures and telling the Maidens to stay close to home. "Where the fun in that? I mean, I can stay at home if I wanted to play in the republics. I would want to see something new." She was speaking with some vigor, as if she had to argue with Daia.
"I'm sorry, it's just... you know the Citadel is as close to getting away from the home worlds and into contact with all the other species as was easily possible. But I want to go much further eventually. I mean, sharing classes and projects is fine but it's not like the real thing out there." she laughed. "I once thought about signing up for a construction company to go rebuild but... uhm, well, I am not good enough at many things I suppose and I am no real heavy lifter. And then came the scholarship for the CU. I am grateful for it but I definitely want to see mere."

Daia nodded her understanding, and shared Cyana’s laugh.
“I do know,” she agreed. “Did I seem like some old matron there? Well,” she shrugged, “I am four hundred, I guess I ought to act like it, if only once in a while. Or maybe it’s my father’s side - he was turian, career military. He never tried to discourage me from going off to see the galaxy - he knew asari are asari, you might as well tell the tides to stop moving - but he was big on preparation. Worked out alright,” she smiled, then gave Cyana a long look, and sighed, seeming to be reflecting on a happy memory.
“You know what,” she said, “this is going to completely undercut any advice about being cautious, but... That moment you’re looking for, when you’ve gone beyond where your borders are now, and you find yourself on some colony or port or wherever, you look around and everything, everything, you see is different to what you’ve seen before? It really is as good as you think it’s going to be. Better, even.” She laughed lightly. “I’d say I envy you, but Illium’s pretty lively - good enough to keep an old girl like me happy.”

“It was like that when I first came to the Citadel! It was such a small place. Not in scope but like, as if the civilizd galaxy is condensing here, getting closer. So much different than Thessia.”
Cyana chuckled into her hand, a bit embarrassed. “You definitely don’t sound like four hundred, ma’am!” She replied. But of course why should she be surprised at the age? After all she’s bonded and settled… Wait, didn’t she say she was an escort? But how did that go together? Of course Cyana could never ask this bluntly Maybe that was some Illium thing. Or maybe Daia meant something completely different with the word. Most likely the young asari looked a bit puzzled while thinking this through.
“Maybe I could start out on Illium indeed. Is it as exotic as they say?” Of course that was a bit of a stupid question to ask a native. “I mean, in terms of people from the Terminus hanging out there? You know, the mercenaries and gangs doing their trade? That’s the stories and the holovision back on Thessia. I know, much is most likely exaggerated out of proportion, but still..." She looked up to Daia with an eager expression, suckling at the straw of her soda.

“I never really felt like I should stop being a maiden,” Daia replied, smiling her appreciation of the compliment. “No complaints so far...”
She nodded agreement with Cyana’s thoughts about Illium.
“I’m sure there’s some exaggeration,” she mused. “There always is - although Omega gets the worst of it, from the movies you’d think it was just one constant gang war there. Not that that never happens, mind. Illium is... it’s very different to Thessia, to any Republic I’ve ever lived in. I mean, there’s familiarity obviously, being among asari - and it’s not just the corporate oligarchy everyone makes it out to be, the rich ruling and everyone else being at their whim. You need to be careful of course, but you’re not perpetually one mistake away from slavery, things aren’t that predatory. But with so much allowed, people come from all over the Terminus - who’d never even go into C-Space. That’s one reason it wound up top of my list, when I decided I was done travelling, and had enough credits to make a go of settling down in style. If I wasn’t going to travel the whole galaxy anymore, I’d be somewhere the whole galaxy would come to me - or enough of it to keep me entertained.” She chuckled at the thought.

“This sounds like a fun lifestyle!” Cyana joked. Would she be as cool when she was that age? “So that business of yours – you were talking about clean rooms? Does the mean you even do business with the Rannochians? Now that’s a planet I’d like to see some day.”
