“Mm-hm,” Daia nodded brightly. “That’s one reason we’ve kept above water, actually - not a lot of Illium companies are on good terms with the former Migrant Fleet, so our being able to co-develop technologies with Rannoch is a big advantage. And the big envirotech firms back home aren’t really that interested in quarians, to be honest - all the credits are in large-scale climate control, the big arcology cities nearer the equator, and like I said nobody having much time for the Fleet, or Pilgrims back then...” She sighed, then flashed a quick smile, not wanting to drag the conversation off in a sombre direction. “But it gives us our niche - small but reliable.” She grinned impishly. “Also there’s not many escort-CEOs in Nos Astra, that’s kind of like bonus advertising - standing out from the crowd is good for business.”

Cyana listened with interest to Daia explaining the particularities of business with quarians but then blinked a bit confused. "Does that mean you escort your business clients? I mean, I've heard of convincing negotiation techniques but that's kind of unique."

“Not so unique as all that,” Daia laughed. “There are quite a few prominent corporations that’ll include ‘companions’ with the luxury hotel suites and restaurants they treat their prospective clients to. All part of wooing business. Of course the executives themselves don’t get involved - or rather, they keep it very quiet when they do.” She rolled her eyes. “Some of our corporate leaders have very inflated ideas about their public image, regardless of what they’ll do behind closed doors if it helps them up the political ladder. I shouldn't complain though, those 'hands off' executives end up paying me and my colleagues quite a lot to be 'hands on' in their place.”
She chuckled wryly.
“Luckily us smaller fishes in the corporate sea don’t have to worry about that sort of thing,” she mused. “Or at least, I never have. I do keep my two careers separate, for the sake of transparency - I think our technology should be incentive enough for our customers, without putting myself on the table, so to speak. But it’s something they gets us noticed - a curiosity - and anything that makes people remember your name, for whatever reason, can be valuable, if you play it well. We can’t afford to run advertisements all over the Illium Entertainment movie channels, after all.” She shrugged idly. “A few times customers - on the medtech side - have approached me, as an escort; that’s not a problem, so long as it’s clear that’s a separate transaction.” She grinned. “You’ve probably heard how thorough Illium contracts are, and everyone does make sure they read them, so it’s easy enough to be sure there are no misconceptions. Actually it’s more often the other way - clients on the escort side are intrigued by the notion of a ‘corporate leader’ being available. I’m far from a ‘leader’ of anything, granted,” she smiled, “but as always there’s a level of fantasy in play, so, close enough.”

"I see" Cyana replied although she did not fully understand everything. Of course her experiences were limited and a lot of things she only knew by hear-say. Girls in the refugee camps had been telling stories of their own past lives of course and among students the most impossible tales always got around the fastest. This one she would not have believed if it wouldn't have been coming from Daia herself.
"I know, I should have been travelling more and I should have seen more but the war kind of prevented that. I have the feeling I have to catch up and eventually get around more. But all that's either expensive or complicated. Like finding a shipping company that takes you on. I think that would have been easy on Thessia back when but here on the Citadel, everyone is just on their way through. I mean, I like it very much but isn't it like a giant monorail station? You meet so many people with their stories - like you for example but then, you need money and stuff to actually get somewhere." She snorted. "As if life isn't expensive enough on the station." she cheered at Daia with her soda.
"Is that true that an asari maiden can earn all her travel expenses with like, dancing and stuff?" She wouldn't know what exactly 'stuff' would be though.

“A lot of the time,” Daia agreed with a slight smile. “There’s not a lot of places in the galaxy where nobody wants to watch asari dance. Well, strip, to be honest, but it’s better when there’s dancing as well” She paused, thoughtful. “Not sure how the geth feel about us in that regard. Or the rachni, for that matter. Never met a rachni to ask.” She shrugged and went on, glancing at Cyana to try to gauge how much she might know, or be comfortable with knowing, already - everyone matured at their own rate. “It helps if you like having an audience of course. Back when I was still at university I did a lot of performing - just amateur, not as a study - so it wasn’t much of a switch for me, to start showing off professionally. It’s not everyone’s cup of kaffe.”
She took a sip of her mostly-neglected drink.
“Mind you, choosing the right place to work is a big help,” she reflected. “Somewhere where the police will actually give a damn if you get in trouble, for preference - there are worlds in the Terminus, or the Traverse, where organised crime completely runs the business, even casual dancers at spaceport bars, and it’s not like here where you can go to C-Sec.” She frowned into her drink a moment, then shook her head and gave Cyana a quick grin, lightening the mood. “But I suppose that’s true of travelling in general - know where you’re going before you jump on a ship.” She paused, then chuckled. "Or at least have an idea what it'll be like, if there were no surprises at all there'd be no point going, right?"

"Sure", she replied as if she knew about the things Daia was talking about. In reality she had never been to a strip club in her life. She wasn't sure if this was anything that could be for her. Cyana wasn't shy or ashamed - nothing that was widespread among asari anyway - she just never had chances to gather experience.
"Aren't all those species fascinating? I think the Rachni are very interesting in particular, we know so little about them but there new publications coming out now that they are rediscovered. Maybe I want to sign on with a ship going to Ninmah Cluster. That would be very exciting and probably that's going to be acool subject for writing a paper about, don't you think? Yes, I think I will propose this to my professor!" She suckled some soda through the straw and looked very satisfied with her idea.

“That would be amazing,” Daia agreed. “Would the university be able to make any arrangements, do you think? Definitely look into it - if I were a century or two younger and still travelling...” She shook her head, grinning. “I’ll just have to hope some rachni come by Illium one day. Can’t imagine why they would, but I’m sure somebody will figure out something to sell to them sooner or later.” She chuckled, then paused, looking reflective.
“Did you know there are asari living with them?” she asked. “Not very many, but some. I have a friend of a friend who’s with the embassy here, and she was involved in one of the Citadel missions to reestablish diplomatic ties, when the rachni came back out of isolation and put their formal claim to Ninmah. She met some of them, acting as go-betweens during the negotiations - cultural translators, in a sense, to help explain the rachni perspective to the Citadel team, and vice versa. Arina - our friend - said they’re mostly people who encountered the rachni before anyone knew they were still around, deep-range surveyors and explorers, and chose to stay with them, to help them rebuild. It seems the ‘song’, the rachni shared mind, or communication stream - evidently it’s difficult to put into words - is something asari can join with. A kind of meld, but not like any other species. I'd love to know...” She sighed wistfully, as if trying to imagine it, then smiled. "Maybe you'll get the chance one day?"

“I don’t think the university can do much for me when I want to sign on with a merchant company. I suppose they have some connections? Although, … thinking about it there are no in depth courses for rachni matters that I know of. A basic course exists, the professor is someone who had contact with them during the Crucible project, but I think he never was on their planet. That’s still something kind of… limited, isn’t it?”
She pursed her lips, thinking. “You really have an acquaintance at the embassies? They sure would know about the rachni. I’ll have to read up in detail about the legal status and all the things first of course. No, I didn't know about asari being with rachni. That's interesting though what you tell me about the song and their ability to meld. We still haven't fond another species that can meld as we do.”
“Anyway, I will make an appointment with that professor. Maybe he lets me into his summer course so I can grab some information before starting such a project. Most of what I know about rachni was from history classes and that seems a bit outdated and useless now.” She chuckled and finished her soda.

“Maybe not the university officially,” Daia agreed, “but I’ve found academics have a knack of keeping contacts in the oddest of places - I suppose there’s a kind of kinship, one teacher to another, even if they’re from completely different species and their nations barely talk to one another at a government level.” She chuckled at a memory. “I remember back when I first came to Illium, I knew a professor at Nos Astra University who was actually able to take her students on tours to the Hegatha Necropolis - this when the Hegemony was barely acknowledging the outside galaxy, and the embargoes on commercial traffic were at their height. Teachers are sneaky, you know - and they never let anything as trifling as a cold war get in the way of their projects,” she grinned.
She nodded and raised her half-full glass to Cyana’s empty one, a little salute in parting.
“It’s been lovely meeting you,” she said warmly. “I'll mention you to my friend at the embassy, you never know what might turn up. In any case, I hope you have some wonderful adventures - here’s my ident.” She produced a holographic ‘card’ from her omni-tool and offered it. “If you ever stop by Illium, you can tell me all about them.”

“I don’t now, I wouldn’t say it’s like a cold war, not like what we had with the Hegemony. It’s more like…. The rachni doping rachni things in rachni places and we have no idea what that is. They definitely do not seem to need us to do their thing. Mostly they live on planets that we can only access in hazard suits. I assume there are scholars on their way already, and we will get better lectures in the decades to come. But the only bits we know is from those who met them on the Crucible.”
She also opened her Omni tool and exchanged her contact card. “You'd really do that? Here’s mine, thank you very much, I’ll definitely call when I make it to Illium,” she replied with some enthusiasm and emptied her soda.
"Thank you for your time though, I wish you a good journey home." Cyana wasn't sure if someone from the embassies really was interested in helping a student like her out. Well, just a maiden with travel urges really. She had to talk to a professor about her ideas first.
