Cali let out a sigh of disappointment and nodded. She then began sawing away at the bolts that had in tightened down to the piece of rubble, hoisting it into the air and slamming it to the ground. It hardly caused a crack, in which she began stomping until it finally gave way under her foot. She shrugged and look back at Daniel, crossing her arms. "Shall we finish the assessment here and return to base, or would you like to see more of the lovely world of Illium?" She joked sarcastically, unable to help but move her mandibles into a grin. She expected what the answer would be and began picking up some of the guns and clips off the dead marauders. "Help me these things, will ya?" She asked, already tossing one in his direction.

He watches the device hit the ground before getting stepped on into smaller pieces, even if they had disabled it they wouldn't have learned much from it. Doubt there was any Reaper tech experts on this planet, only people left are civilians, a disorganized military and any unlucky bastard who happens to be stuck on this planet, including him. Daniel got the impression she used humor to mask the hard truth, that this planet is already lost, it's beauty will be nothing more then ash and rubble. "Lovely wouldn't be the word I would use, not anymore." He says coldly before looking around at all the death and destruction. Daniel wished he still had the will just to grin back and laugh it off but humor won't bring back the dead, save lost words or defeat the Reapers. She could see it in his eyes, not the will to give up but the acceptance of what's going on around him. Reaching out he catches one of the rifles before getting to work scavenging the dead. Grabbing all he could carry the human looked down at one of the marauder corpses, hard to believe at one point that thing was a normal Turian. At least the two got the job done, all he needs now is a plan of what to do next and maybe some food.

She looked at Daniel and let out an other little sigh. "Look, buddy." She began, marching up the crater, sitting herself on the edge of it. She set her rifles down next to her and looked down into the hole. "This war... It's hell. No other way to explain it. But you gotta keep your head up, keep pushing, keep trying." She lectured, looking down at the marauder's bodies. "If you don't, you'll end up like them, or worse." She explained with sense of morose, lying down and looking up to the sky. It was a mixture of red and orange as the sun began to set. "It's hard to think as if we're all gonna make it out of this alive, that it'll be alright, because it's not." She said as her eyes shifted around the sky. "A lot of us are gonna die and be burried in shallow, nameless graves. Those who survive, if we survive, won't be written down in any history books. But at least we tried, at least we fought." She said, closing her eyes and taking in a deep breath. "Some say submission is preferable to extinction. I believe in the opposite." She sighed, taking a moment to just lie down and relax.

Following her up the incline he drops the scavenged rifles before sitting down next to her. It seemed odd to him that everything was still and silent, it was peaceful. To him it's hard to stay relaxed in this environment. The peace and quiet always seems to get interrupted by violence, death, war. Makes him think how people on the Citadel continue on their lives normally as the rest of the galaxy burns. But Cali had a point, the little moments are all we have left. Daniel glanced to the side seeing rubble along the ground, a half broken mirror laid in the dirt forcing him to look at himself. Dirt and scrapes scatter along his face, his hair dirty and untidy, stubble growing along his face. Looking down at the dried blood on his hand he let out a deep sigh before running his hands over his face. "Do you ever think..about why you still fight?" He asked her looking over at the alien. "Hope is getting harder and harder to find, for people like us stuck out in Reaper controlled space..all we can do is survive and hope that whoever is out there will win the war, and if we even do win what happens afterwards?" He spoke of heavy questions, the human laid back as well falling down next to her. His eyes look up into the sky. "I don't even know what to do anymore, I've been bouncing between planet to planet since the war started, helping where I can, the friends and loved ones that stood beside me now gone, I think sometimes I'd rather be on Earth, to do what I swore to do, protect my planet and my people." Daniel shrugs as he shook his head. "Is it all worth fighting for?"

Cali remained silent as she glanced from the sky to the ground, piecing together her answer for the hard hitting questions. She took in a deep sigh before letting it out, her chest slowly rising and falling. The air around her, to no surprise, smelled like spent thermal clips. "I fight..." She said. Her eyes drifting to what was left of a building. "... I fight for the possibility that someone else won't have to. You've seen my soldiers, most have been poor their whole lives or have only become poor just before the war. Me doing what I'm doing to them..." She said, shaking her head. "It's not right. I have to remind myself that they're choosing to do this, that they want to be in this fight. Then I look at their faces..." She guilt tripped herself, closing her eyes. "... Civilians shouldn't have to take up arms to ensure they have so much as food the next day." She whispered, again, mostly to herself. "So is it worth fighting for?" She restated the question, opening her eyes again. "Ask that yourself after you think about the trillions of lives out there now. The billions living on each planet. The millions of living in each city, the thousands in each district, the hundred within walking distance, and the one next to you." She said, falling silent as she looked to the sky.

Daniel's eyes glance over to her, he listens closely to what she has to say. Her reason to fight is noble, many soldiers share the same ideal including him. "In a war like this...there are no more civilians, only soldiers, survivors and the dead." It was the dark and harsh truth, those who cannot raise a rifle to fight end up dying, you can't depend on others to get you out of a nightmare like this in one piece. You fight or you die, it's that simple. But still people who only wanted a peaceful life are now thrown into the fire, it isn't fair for them but life isn't fair, and the Reapers don't play fair. "Don't blame yourself for leading them, they know the stakes, they know they have to fight." Daniel tried to offer a few reassuring words. "Just remember that the moment they picked up a rifle they stopped being a civilian and became a soldier." Of course anyone can be a soldier, you just have to be willing to fight and die for something. He paused to think over her words, he couldn't give her a answer to that last question, he'll know the answer when this war is over.

She let out one more sigh. Daniel was a soldier for sure, just by the way he talked, and a stubborn one at that. She slowly stood up and collected the assault rifles next to her. "Tell that to the child aiming a gun at a monster." She said bluntly, starting to march off. Her face appeared blank, clearly not wanting to continue on the subject. She didn't even so much as wait for Daniel to catch up. Even given the combat advantage of the Kodiak, she appeared to not even care for that and kept moving.

His heart slightly dropped by her words, it shouldn't even surprise him but still, sometimes it was best not to think about the war or the bigger picture. Shaking his head the engineer got up and grabbed whatever he could carry. Seems like they were walking back. Sending instructions to the Kodiak the beaten up thing started to lift up into the air once more before flying off going to a much more safer spot. Daniel quickly starts to jog forward to catch up with the Turian. The man was dead silent as they walked, at the moment he just thought of food and sleep.

It wasn't until Cali reached the bunker again that she started talking. "Everyone, I'd like you to meet your new squad leader, Daniel!" She exclaimed, everyone in the room turning to look at her. "He's boneheaded, reckless, resourceless, hardly thinks about his squad..." She began, glancing at him, then down to where his Cerberus branded weapon would be if it weren't hidden, taking in a deep breath. "... And trustworthy. I could have died if it weren't for his engineering finesse. He also brought a new card to the table; a Kodiak with a mounted gun." She said, looking up and at the new resistance member to her side. "But it needs serious repairs. I want every one who knows so much as how to use a screwdriver to speak to Daniel. Take any scrap metal and break it down to omni-gel." She said, nodding and looking back to her survivors. "Soups on, young and disabled first." She said, stepping away from the scene. She moved over to a corridor, in which she went down and to a small room on the left.

He wasn't exactly ready to be put on the spotlight like that, at the moment he just wanted to collapse onto the nearest bunk. Squad leader? The man shot her a look before glancing back towards the other survivors now looking at him. Never did he think that he would be put in such a position, he didn't feel ready for it but this was war, people need leaders and apparently he was now one of those leaders. The weapon on his hip was half hidden by his jacket as he looks back at the Turian hearing her list all the negative qualities about him, he couldn't argue back since most of what she said was true. Now the vehicle he intended to use to get off this planet just became a tool for her army, to him it was just one damaged shuttle that would get easily shot down, but to these people it may have been hope, another piece of equipment to help them fight, to survive. Not to mention some of the cargo still on the shuttle could be put to use. A lot of responsibility was just thrown onto his shoulders, he couldn't stare back at the other survivors, they looked at him as a leader, someone to trust, someone that will offer them help and hopefully victory, but if they knew he was Cerberus then all of that changes. As Cali walked away he gave the others one last glance, it felt like the time to say something, some heroic speech about how he's happy to help every single one here and together we'll get through this. But he had no words to say, he was a soldier not a politician. No way could he look each and everyone of them in the eye and give false promises. Instead he took a few steps back before turning around to venture through the corridor that Cali went down.

Cali looked back to see Daniel had followed her. She made a quick glance around, then gestured for him to follow her inside the room.
It looked like little more than a small archiving room that had been stripped of everything but a bench which had a small pillow and a sleeping bag. She began removing pieces of her psuedo-armor, looking up at Daniel. "Hope you don't mind I put you on the spot like that." She apologized. Under her armor was tattered clothing fit for a female turian, which had a patchwork hood on it. "I didn't really accommodate for bunks for a new soldier, but there should be a sleeping bag and pillow in that last room on the right. You can bunk with me tonight." She explained, seating herself on the bench. "I'm proud of you Daniel, I hope you understand that." She complimented as she looked at him with her mandibles open into a smile. "Wait about five minutes, then do you mind getting me a bowl of dextro mushroom soup?" She asked, starting to relax in her bunk.

Stepping into the room the engineer glances around his surroundings, it was no five star hotel but beggars can't be choosers. "It's fine." He replies back, turning to face her the man quickly glanced to the side seeing her strip from the makeshift combat gear. He nods in response, initially he was thinking of sleeping in the shuttle, but he'll just sleep wherever he's told to. Looking back at her Daniel softly spoke up. "Why, don't see any specific reason to be proud of me." Pacing back and forth along the room he reaches over and slides his jacket off, he was wearing a beat up t-shirt underneath with a thermal clip pack and a few pouches strapped along his belt. His eyes scan along the alien's mandibles as if he was taking notes, call it curiosity, the Cerberus engineer hadn't really encountered too many Turians before the war started, he thought their mandibles were a interesting part of their body, how it moves and forms human like expressions like grins and smiles. Tossing the jacket aside he activates his omni-tool to set a five minute timer.

She simply shrugged as she watched him take off his jacket. "It's not every day you hear about Cerberus members helping out someone who's not human." She replied, looking up at the ceiling. "You humans are a strange bunch though. Able to do something it took the turians lifetimes to do in the span of a few decades." She stated, just blinking and for the first time not looking even remotely on edge. "Then one of you comes up with this group saying aliens will stop at nothing to destroy humanity, then suddenly hundreds take up the call. Now Cerberus exists." She said, turning to her side to look at him. "Why did you join?" She asked, a hand on her hip. Cali still wasn't certain he was Cerberus for sure, given the story he told her earlier, but she felt like it was likely he was lying about being a colonist.

Her words sparked a slight inner panic in his mind, trying to hide that truth has been very difficult. Deep down he felt like he could trust her but still, what alien would openly accept a Cerberus soldier? Though he did prove himself to a degree out there on the battlefield it he couldn't help but feel that the moment he reveals the truth she'll slash his neck open. It would be easier to lie and say something along the lines of what makes you think I'm Cerberus. But digging the lie deeper when someone has practically figured it out would be stupid. Daniel glanced towards the floor before shaking his head. The right thing would be tell the truth, but it also felt like the stupid decision. It was clear to the Turian her words bubbled up distress in him, his body language screamed guilty. Sighing the human reaches into his back pocket and pulls out something. Looking at the item in the palm of his hands he looks back at her and tosses whatever it was over to her. It was a pair of dogtags, one had the Cerberus insignia on it as the other had his basic info. "Because they were the only ones to give me a chance." He admits before walking over to sit next to her. The cat was out of the bag, if she intended to harm him after confirming the truth he wouldn't put up a fight, maybe being slain by an alien would be poetic justice for him being part of Cerberus, but he trusts her enough at the moment to speak the truth.

Although she already assumed that to be the truth compared to the crap he tried to use earlier, she still looked a little disappointed. She sat back up again and moved so she was next to Daniel. "So you did it for the benefits?" She asked, one hand gently rubbing his shoulder. It was weird, but Daniel intrigued her. Able to come on to a reaper dominated planet with a Kodiak, then use said Kodiak with only a scrap of life left over to fight Reaper forces for a group of aliens which his group resents, then to be willing to help them more? It was very rare and interesting.
